Afraid of the Dark? Turn on Your Night Light!

Were you one of those kids that didn’t like to go to bed at night because shadows and noises frightened you?  No matter what you did…hide under the covers…count sheep…sing out loud…your mind went wild with the images of scary monsters or cartoon villains. Thank God someone invented the “night light” for parents who were exhausted from the bedtime ritual of tucking their child in for the night only to hear them calling out, “I am afraid of the dark!”  Something magical happens when that little light shines just enough to dispel the exaggerated images created by ordinary furniture or imaginary creatures causing relentless fear.  It is amazing how one tiny light can bring such comfort.

Even as adults, we find ourselves in dark places…where the enemy makes monsters out of shadows and we are emotionally frozen in our tracks with fear! It is then, when we find ourselves wide awake in the wee hours of the night and our hearts are beating wildly with worry, that we search for light to be shed on the darkness! Have you been there?  Are you there frequently?  And you think to yourself, “I should have outgrown this by now!”  But, the reality is that darkness changes the way we view things.  It has always been the workplace of the enemy.

Before the fall, God created light and saw that it was ‘good.’ Then He separated the light from the darkness and called the light “day” and the darkness “night” (Genesis 1:3 NLT).  Since creation, dark and light cannot co-exist.  If there is light, darkness is conquered. Thank God for the spiritual ‘Night Lights’ He has provided for us when we are in the dark!

There are several scriptural truths that provide light in the darkness when the enemy is distorting our surroundings and circumstances with his lies.

“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light.  For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.” Isaiah 9:2 NLT

Jesus came for that very purpose, to bring light to a dark and lost world without hope.  It was really dark on Good Friday when Christ was crucified and died on the cross.  So dark, that even those who did not know the truth shuddered.  But, on Resurrection Sunday a bright light shone from the tomb and darkness had to leave!

The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.”  John 1:9 NLT

The best decision anyone can make is to invite the one who is Light into their life and be forever changed!  Not only will Christ dispel darkness, lies of Satan about who you are and your past, but He will shed new light on areas of your life that will come alive with His glory!  Not only will you be filled with His light, but your very core will become so revolutionized and restored that it will be radiant with His indwelling presence.

“By your words I can see where I’m going; they throw a beam of light on my dark path.” Psalm 119:105 MSG.

When we don’t know which way to go and we fear what is ahead, we need God to shed His light on our situation.  In order to choose wisely and not make a rash decision, we need to turn to the source of light and get insight that only God can give.  His Word is a sure and steady guide to help us sort out the decisions that are before us.

If what we want to do doesn’t line up with God’s Word, it is not difficult to figure out what the answer is.  Don’t do it!  We don’t have to pray or fast or ask counsel about doing something that God’s Word advises against.  We already have our answer.  Now there may be times that the interpretation of scripture is not so simple. To rightly divide the Word of Truth will take a deeper understanding. Then we may need a good commentary or wise counsel of mature believers to get the light we need to find our way. But, God will always provide what we need when we ask.  He does not want us wandering or filled with fear.

If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light.” Luke 11:36 NLT

Just because we have the light of Christ and the guidance of the Word, doesn’t mean the enemy is not going to try and put out our light. After coming to know the Lord and receiving His light, I still found that the enemy would try to cover my light, blow it out or use any method he could to destroy it. We have to be vigilant especially in the darkness to run to the light and call on Jesus to come to our rescue. In the midnight hours, He will be there for you! Because He is within you, you can speak to the darkness and it must go, in Jesus Name! You have been given authority over the darkness.

“As you have the light, believe in the light. Then the light will be within you and shining through your lives. You’ll be children of the light” John 12:35 MSG.

And just like Moses who glowed with the light of God’s presence, the more time you spend with God and in His Word, the greater your light will shine before others who walk in darkness. You will be able to light their way right to Jesus.

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!

Prayer:  Jesus be my light, show me the way I am to go and make yourself at home in me so that I will not only know the truth, but the truth will set me FREE FROM FEAR!  I ask that you shed your light on me and fill me with who you are so that all darkness will have to leave! In Jesus mighty name, AMEN!
